The client requested the house be impressive and true to it's Texan location, but comfortable and casual. Every design decision was made with the client's family lifestyle in mind. Local stone, wood and expansive glazing was used throughout to reinforce the connection to it's site. The home takes advantage of this large site in the way of large open spaces, but they are assembled together simply without fussy circulation. We accomplished this by using tactile natural materials such as honed marble and rough sawn oak. By keeping the palette neutral and the architecture open and honest, the house showcases the spectacular views of the Laguna Beach coastline. This remodel of an existing 3 story home took the existing house down to it's essential structure and completely transformed the residence. To accomplish this, the existing spaces were edited to a more current, subtle style. This necessitated opening up rooms and removing dated architectural features and replacing them with simpler forms that allowed the view of the ocean and beach to take prominence. New materials highlighted the textural quality of mid century design which also provided a graceful connection to the native artwork.
